SCAMPER method on a package of rice

Substitute: When designing a new packaging for rice with substitution in mind, my go to thought was “What sort of material can I use for the packaging to make it stand out from the crowd?”. I would have my packages made of paper, to market a dynamic and environmentally friendly form. It is guaranteed to stand out when customers are browsing the options for rice on the market.

Combine: With my packaging I would market it and sell it alongside bags that you can boil the rice in. These bags would be of different sizes, so that the customer can fill which size they desire for a given meal. It would build upon the boil-in-bag idea but rather than having the rice already provided in bags, it is more customizable for the user.

Adapt: Instead of selling my rice in a box, my package would be round as an orb. This would mean that the rice is already in a rice-ball shape when purchased and can therefore be cooked in that shape too. Sizes on the packages can vary, meaning that its possible to buy several small portions and boil them as such, cutting down on the work that the user would have to do in order to make rice-balls.

Modify: One way I would modify my package of rice to include several bags of rice already mixed with different spices, and therefore containing a variety of flavors and options when making food.

Put to another use: Using rice as décor during weddings is a common practice for a lot of newly wed couples. Marketing a package of rice specifically for this purpose is therefore a great way of expanding the market and audience. Selling rice with different colors will both achieve a higher demand by weddings and children who enjoys colors.

Eliminate: For this technique I would attempt to eliminate as much text as possible and illustrate my packaging with visuals alone. Of course, there would have to be a table of contents in terms of weight, nutrients, etc. but I would cut down as much text as possible, even marketing the packaging with a blank, front slate.

Rearrange: For a rearrangement idea, I would focus on putting the instructions on how to boil rice right on the front of the package, marketing it as an easy way to cook rice quickly by fronting an easy instruction. This would put the process of learning how to cook the rice before purchase, making the customer gain more confidence that it is an easy to use product before spending their money.
