Lesson task – Pace and contrast

This task challenged me to investigate how layout changes between physical and digital formats. I used the Norwegian newspaper VG as my base for comparison, looking at both their webpage and physical newspapers.

The first thing that seperates the two is their direction; the newspaper is design for spanning two pages, with some pictures filling both of said pages with text adorned underneath. The layout is thus designed with a horisontal progression in mind, the viewer start out at the left page and work their wayfrom the direction. The webpage is designed to be scrolled, thus having a more vertical approach. The landing page for the website is also filled with pictures and shocking titles, since the user can decide for themselves if they want to consume the text by clicking on the link. Since this is not possible in a physical variation, the layout is grinded in a way to pack a lot of text into the grids and let pictures dominate to get the viewers attention quickly. The webpage mainly utilizes a two column layout for its main content, with a third smaller column to the right containing articles reserved for premium customers.

The physical edition uses a wider grid with four to five columns, as all the text has to be presented on the articles page. Lastly the versions handle adds slightly differently; the webpage has adds on the side while the physical newspaper has adds on the top and bottom of the page.
